I’ve been wanting to write a song about my grandmother, and how she played such an important role in my life musically. I would go to her house as a kid and play the guitar she had in the closet. The 1957 Les Paul special had belonged to my grandpa. She would show me tapes she had recorded of my dads band, as well as recordings of my grandpa jamming with his friends. At the time, i didn’t realize what was happening. I was being introduced to new genres of music, BUT i was hearing my own family play them. She also introduced me to the sounds of Glen Miller, Ray Price, Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Elvis and many more amazing artist. The new tune that was inspired by that experience will be on my EP.
Over the weekend, i also got my vocal and electrics done for another tune called “better than this”. I cant wait to start recording the new tune, and show you the music life has handed me. -M
So, today i needed to lay down some bass track on the two tunes we tracked drums for. I was planning on using Charlie’s bass, but he had to take it back to houston with him. So there i was, all my hopes and dreams of tracking bass today shattered. Not really, but kind of. So i go down to the music store and decided to find a decent bass, which i really cant afford. So i start looking at some and i make the sales dude an offer. It turns out the bass i wanted was in the store on consignment, and he couldn’t reach the dude who put the bass up for sale. So here’s the kicker….He looks at me and says “just take it for a test drive”….He let me borrow the bass until tuesday. All i can say is God hooked me up, and im blown away. The tracks are coming together quickly. -M
The new year means many things to many different people. Although, to me it means embarking on a musical and spiritual journey like never before. I started my new goal of and an hour and a half minimum practice a day. I know its not a crazy amount of time, but im setting the goal i know ill reach. I will be releasing a five song EP this year. My goal is to have it finished and up online by the end of March at the latest. I cant wait for all of you to hear the songs i’m working on. Im lucky to have Charlie Harper Jr. throwing down his sick grooves on the project, as well as helping me with arrangement ideas etc. I hope to get Chad Carouthers to do the bass on it as well. I have the material mostly written, now its time to iron out the kinks and get the songs tracked. I thank each and everyone one of you who are taking the time to read this and see what’s going on with me. . -M
So recently i’ve been having a hard time finding “recent” music i like to listen to. It all seems so produced and polished. I have been guilty of making things two polished many times. I just wanted to hear something with a live band all going for it at the same time and capturing the chemistry of a group of musicians. So last sunday night i got to see Bobbly Blue Bland in concert. They opened the show with the sax player, trumpet player, guitar player and drummer doing solo’s. Then the one and only Bobby Blue Bland took the stage after the band had been playing for about ten minutes. It was so refreshing to see. Every player on stage was watching the MD as he communicated with Bobby then to the rest of the musicians. It was a legendary performance. I want to make music that is raw, simple, but yet still unique. I love blues, and it was over all amazing. Jimmy Vaughn was also there just checking out the show. I cant wait to get to the level musically where i am that free and loose on stage. I learned so much, be sure to check out his music.
A jam i just did. Me and the pedal filling up a blank canvas. A canvas with mistakes, yet it paints a picture of how i feel.
Let me know your thoughts. -M
